about

This was written on a flight from Vancouver to Halifax. The arrangement is an easy boozy romp. Obviously there would be no way to write the words and music at the same time on an airplane so the words came first then the music which made it much easier to make an interesting arrangement because there were essentially no rules. This is the first of the relationship songs and it tells the story of two lovers whose fate was to separate due to circumstances beyond their control.

lyrics

For Susanna with the starlight eyes,
that shone every time she looked at me.
Darlin’ I can’t tell you any more lies,
I could’ve drowned in the deep of your blue sea.

And you might think you lost your way
And you might feel like nothin’ say
But I know
If all that’s left is a Bob Dylan song
Oh Susanna, You’ll get along
Oh Susanna, You’ll get along

Life is such a mystery,
and I’ve tried and tried to figure out why
Things are the way they came to be,
when I could have fallen forever through your blue sky.

And you might think you lost your way
And you might feel like nothin’ say
But I know
If all that’s left is a Bob Dylan song
Oh Susanna, You’ll get along
Oh Susanna, You’ll get along

The sun sinks silent to the ground,
across the night sky a lone star flies.
I always knew someday I would be found,
but could’ve stayed lost forever in your blue eyes.

And you might think you lost your way
And you might feel like nothin’ say
But I know
If all that’s left is a Bob Dylan song
Oh Susanna, You’ll get along
Oh Susanna, You’ll get along
