about

Runnin’ into the Fire speaks directly to the theme of working-class displacement told from the perspective of one man in a dying factory town. It details some of the hardships that people in those types of communities face, for example, opiate overdoses, abandoned veterans, and a lack of economic opportunity. It also touches on the theme of relationships with the central character being in an estranged relationship that has been strained by economic hardship.

lyrics

I step on to the porch and a warm breeze touches me.
In the vacant homes across the street the grass grows wild and free.

I feel like I’m falling at least once or twice a day.
But nothing hits me hard enough to let myself go all the way.

I think they’re gonna’ shut down number two assembly line.
If that’s the case Judy, we got to choose what’s yours and what’s mine.

But I still gotta’ heart and it’s beatin’ on a drum of desire.
There’s a burning in the air and I’m runnin’ into the fire.

Oh, There ain’t nothin’ new.
I’m always thinkin’ about you.
And all the skys are blue
But I can’t stop thinkin’ about you.
What else can I do?
I’m all alone here thinkin’ about you.
I’m all alone here thinkin’ about you

My best friend Bobby lost his girl to Fentanyl.
The only thing the kid had was Bobby’s number to call.

And, there’s people walking around here in a war that they left behind.
Searching for a reason to live they don’t always find.

Everything I see seems like it’s a fallin’ apart.
But this town is an engine that just needs a little help to start.

And I still gotta’ heart and it’s beatin’ on a drum of desire.

Down on the corner there’s still Tully’s Bar and Grill.
And no one’s goin’ around talkin’ about closin’ down the mill.

I work a few hours in my brother’s shop on the side.
The bank couldn’t take it no matter how hard they tried.

Judy, I guess it don’t matter who’s wrong and who’s right.
When both of us are drinking alone at the end of the night.

Well I still gotta’ heart and it’s beatin’ on a drum of desire.

There’s a burning in the air and I’m runnin’ into the fire.
There’s a burning in the air and I’m runnin’ into the fire.
There’s a burning in the air and I’m runnin’ into the fire.
