about

Commentary on the state of human existence is the best way I can describe this song. In Bob Dylan’s song Slow Train Coming, from the 1979 album of the same name, he uses the metaphor of a slow train to describe how the world is headed for some sort of looming disaster, in 1978 it was a slow train, in today’s world that pace is more like a jet plane. Dark and Dirty World is intended to be an unapologetic commentary on the destruction of the planet due to corporate greed and political corruption. It ends on a somewhat positive note that not all hope is loss and that there is a movement of people that is pushing back against the power base that is desperately trying to hold on to the status quo.

lyrics

There’s a disease, got us on our knees.
Tryin’ to mend our ways before the end of days.
We’re sad and over fed, dying in our beds.
Everywhere is greed, taking way more than you need.

It’s a dark and dirty world.
I hear it all the time.
A dark and dirty world.
A dark and dirty time.
A dark and dirty world.
A dark and dirty time.

All around us are flames, and politicians’ games.
Throwin’ us like a ball baby up against a wall.
Who is black and who is white, who is wrong and who is right?
Doesn’t seem so clear when everything is fear.

It’s a dark and dirty world.
I hear it all the time.
A dark and dirty world.
A dark and dirty time.
A dark and dirty world.
A dark and dirty time.

They’re digging for gold, scared of getting old.
Burning up the sky like the rules do not apply.
What goes up must come down, turning all the water brown.
When there’s nothing left to steal who will file the appeal?

It’s a dark and dirty world.
I hear it all the time.
A dark and dirty world.
A dark and dirty time.
A dark and dirty world.
A dark and dirty time.

Corruption stays on top; the lies will never stop.
Hope is hard to find but not everyone is blind.
They’re pounding at the gates, burning the estates.
The storm is at the door and they’re crying out for more.

Somewhere out there somebody is committing the perfect crime.
Someday all of us won’t end up being worth more than a dime.

Somewhere out there somebody is being absolutely benign.
It does not mean by any stretch everything will turn out just fine.

It’s a dark and dirty world.
I hear it all the time.
A dark and dirty world.
A dark and dirty time.
It’s a dark and dirty world.
We’re runnin’ out of time.
A dark and dirty world.
A dark and dirty time.
A dark and dirty world.
A dark and dirty time.
